Freshmen Survey: First-Year Outlook on Carnegie

With freshmen of the Class of 2017 concluding their first year at Carnegie, we’ve decided to take a look into their perspectives on their views of their school year. As the first year of their high school careers, including their first AP test, comes to an end, we designed a survey filled out by a cross-section of the Class of 2017 through online social media. The survey includes students’ ratings of the overall school year, influence from social pressures, amount of homework and studying time, effect of drama, gossip, and/or bullying, and plans regarding attending Carnegie for their sophomore year. An optional section allows students to freely express their suggestions to an improved year and make any additional comments they might have regarding their school year.

How did the school year go for our freshmen?

21% say it “went extremely well.
60% say it “went quite well.
11% say it “went not so great.
7% say it “went terribly.”

How much did social pressures (fitting in, looking good, etc.) influence them?

18% say the pressures “extremely affected the way they acted and their decisions.
36% say those pressures “somewhat affected them.
46% say those pressures “didn’t affect them much.”

How much time did they spend on homework and studying each night?

25% say they spent “5-6 hours (basically the entire day).”
46% say they spent “3-4 hours (still had time to relax).
29% say they spent “1-2 hours (a lot of free time).”

How much did gossip, bullying, or drama affect them?

8% say it “really affected them.”
32% say it “moderately affected them.
60% say it “didn’t really affect them at all.”

Are they coming back?

75% say “yes. 
21% say “maybe or still deciding.
4% say “no.”

In the optional comments box, some students point out the ongoing gossip shared by some students, as others recall events of one of the biggest and most frequently addressed high school issues: Bullying. Still others reflect on the close-knit student body of Carnegie that distinguishes it from other larger schools. Freshman Maiya Archie notes that although it was “tough getting used to this new rigorous environment,” she  always felt considered a part of family in school.

And a few freshmen carry some wise words (believe it or not). Kathika Seneviratne warns of the dangers of procrastination, as he says, “There will be times where you have to sacrifice your leisure activities (social life, video games, etc.) for homework, but it will be worth it in the long run.” In addition, Aaron Feleke reminds that “every student’s mind needs a break once in a while” and jokingly recommends “no homework or projects next year.”

And lastly, an anonymous comment: “Kill homework, kill grades, kill dress code, just educate.”

    I am a parents and I love this blog. Keep on reporting! I think the homework question results were right on target. If I could change one thing about CVHS, it would be the amount of HW. It is college level, but you don’t take 7 college classes at once in the real world. Your take about 4. So you kids are going to find college a cake walk- about 1/2 the work you do now.

I definitely agree that we do have an overload sometimes, which is unnecessary for the “learning process” whether it be a vanguard school or not. Although it should make us hopeful, knowing that we’re (over)prepared for our upcoming college years!
