If you’re a teenager, getting enough “likes” on Facebook might be on top of your list. But often times it’s not easy getting social media attention when your friends’ news feeds are flooded with Instagram-worthy food, advertisements, and cat videos. When competition arises, keep in mind these seven tips on improving engagement and getting more “likes” on your next post.
1. Write a short caption o-80 characters in length.
A study by Buddy Media shows that posts 80 characters or less in length receive 27% higher engagement rates. As Facebook refreshes its News Feed at a high speed, short posts quickly get attention.
2. Post on a Thursday or Friday.
Compared to other days in the week, Buddymedia’s study found that engagement rates for Facebook are 18% higher on Thursdays and Fridays. This coincides with data from Facebook that reveals that The “Happiness Index’ spikes by 10% on Fridays. Post engagement rates fall slightly below average Monday through Wednesday, with engagement rates Saturday fall almost 20 percent below average.
3. Post visual content.
Photos and video attachments easily draw attention from users who scan their feeds. According to an infographic by Kissmetrics, photo posts on Facebook get 53% more likes, 104% more comments, and 84% more clicks than text-only posts. Bright, colorful visuals attract engagement more often on Facebook, compared to other social media.
4. Post around 8 p.m.
Statuses posted later in the day tend to bring in more shares and likes, peaking at 8 p.m. Shares trickle off around the end of the work day (6 p.m.).
4. Put a call to action.
Calls to action such as “click like if you agree” are often captions for viral posts. And how does Facebook work to determine which posts are viewed the most? Once you post, Facebook allows it to appear on a certain sample size of your friends. If you’re looking for more comments, ask more questions. The Kissmetrics infographic reveals that question posts get 100% more comments than posts without them. Similarly, HubSpot points out that questions to ask include “should,” “would,” “which,” and “who.” In other words, narrow-ended questions that limit the possible answers attract the highest number of comments. On the contrary, open-ended question words like “why” and “how” are less effective comment attractors.
In the end, there’s no “magic” formula to getting more likes on Facebook, and neither does it really matter. It’s the people that you connect with on Facebook, not the number of likes, that defines who you are — it’s about what you want to share with your friends, when you want to, and how long you want it to be.
