The coveted throne for the song for the summer has been a sought after title since before the Billboard Charts came into being. This is the song that you blast while chilling poolside or cruising down the highway. When you think of summer 2015, memories of this song will be permanently ingrained in your head. Whether you love it or hate it, the radio plays this song to death and it will be stuck in your head for the majority of the summer. Last summer, “Fancy” by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea took the throne, and the year before that “Blurred Lines” was king. Usually this late in the summer we have a shoo-in winner, but this year, there are a few songs who are equally worthy for the title. Here are the top 5 songs of the summer as defined by the Billboard Song of the Summer Chart.

Billboard Songs of the Summer Charts

See You Again – Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth

Who knew that this number one hit single would sustain itself long enough to be considered the song of the summer. This tune came out with blockbuster Fast & Furious 7 in mid-April, propelling itself to the top of the Hot 100 chart for 12 non-consecutive weeks. Written in memorial for the death of Paul Walker, the song is played at the end of Furious 7, where we see Walker drive off into the distance. This slow rap jam is great for an emotional moment, but not necessary what to play when you are ready to party.

With the release of this song, the world definitely understood the power of Taylor Swift. This is Swift’s second song to reach the number one position in one week. This is mainly because of the wildly anticipated music video featuring famous actresses and musicians ranging from Ellie Goulding to Cindy Crawford as well as the inspiration for the song, the famous feud between Katy Perry and Swift. Swift’s original verses are replaced by Kendrick Lamar’s rapping to make the song as hyped as possible. Though the song only stayed on top of the charts for a week, this song definitely deserves the runner-up spot for the song of the summer.

Cheerleader – OMI

This is the second time that an unknown reggae artists has tackled the American charts winning a spot as a song of the summer. Last year’s “Rude” by Magic! held to the top position for six weeks. OMI, the singer, can thank German DJ Felix Jaehn for remixing the song into a number one hit.

Trap Queen – Fetty Wap

Praised by contemporary music critics for its cheery and infections melody, this upbeat hip-hop song nagged the number two spot on the Hot 100, kept from the top position by “See You Again”. This is a perfect song to roll down your windows to and sing along to Wap’s rap/sung chorus.
