From YouTube to the music scene, online sensation Troye Sivan has once again returned with another stunning EP. Sivan, for those who are not familiar is a South African YouTuber, (currently based in Australia) who made his debut in the music scene through his viral original song “The Fault In Our Stars”. Based off of John Green’s book The Fault In Our Stars back in 2013, the song scored him a record deal with Capitol Records. His EP WILD was released on September 4th, 2015 as a continuation of his first EP, TRXYE, which was released back in 2014.
Sivan began his music career on his YouTube back in 2007 when he was 13 covering songs such as Tell Me Why and I Believe in You. However, his career on YouTube didn’t propel until 2013, after gaining attention for his popular “Coming Out” video, which was a major deal in the LGBT community. Ever since then, Sivan has been making YouTube videos and making music with Capitol Records. His debut EP, TRXYE, was announced at VidCon followed by the EP’s release on August 15th, 2014. Sivan’s music career skyrocketed with his TRXYE, reaching #5 on the US Billboard 200, and #2 in Canada and New Zealand. His single on the EP, Happy Little Pill was the most popular song on his debut EP, which currently has over 18 million views on YouTube.
Sivan announced the release of his new EP at this year’s VidCon and used Tumblr as a promotion platform leading up to the release of his 2nd EP WILD. Once again, Sivan has hit the charts with WILD which has already hit #1 in Australia, and #5 in the US, UK, and Ireland. Unlike his previous EP’s, WILD consists of 6 songs and has 2 collaborations with The Broods and Tkay Maidza. The content of each of Sivan’s songs really speak to pop culture today, which makes his music so likable. On top of that, the way he styles his EP is really different from what most artists do. Sivan took artistic thought into his EP such as the unique album art and how he capitalized the titles of each of his songs. In his EP, the collaborations with The Broods and Tkay Maidza help convey the messages of the songs they’re in, due to the fact that the lyrics written complemented each of their vocal stylings really well. Through his risks and endeavors, Sivan’s EP brings an element of personal story which is told through his songwriting making him a true artist.
Sivan’s EP is one of the best music collections of the year and represents the modern genre of pop music in every single way. The only criticism that could be made of WILD is that it doesn’t have enough songs, which means that Sivan needs to write a new album for his fans soon. Overall, WILD is an amazing EP and is definitely worth checking out, so stay in tuned for more Sivan in the future.
